On September 17, Steve Maloney, emergency preparedness specialist, graduated from FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy at the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Maryland, after he completed the full curriculum that supports the advancement of the emergency management profession at strategic policy and executive leadership levels.

Steve completed the four resident courses in the Executive Academy to include: Emergency Management—A Leadership Challenge; Integrating Science into Emergency Management Policies and Decisions; Emergency Management in the 21st Century; and Exercising Emergency Management Executive Policy and Decision-making; and a collaborative capstone project. The Executive Academy instills emergency management leaders with a deeper understanding of contemporary and emerging emergency management issues, debates, and public policy. It provides insights, theories, tools and resources that enable decision-makers to think and act more strategically and to build capacity to protect against, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all types of disasters.

These courses will ultimately enhance Steve’s knowledge and role here at the Board as emergency preparedness specialist. At the Executive Academy, meta-leadership, critical thinking, visionary strategic planning, and negotiation and conflict resolution skills are developed and then applied to real-world, complex problems. Steve will now be able to better leverage science, technology, engineering, and data analysis to make better decisions and policies here at the Board.
